The Brief:

They say the early bird gets the worm—but what about the early bird that stays late? If you’re in need of a focused, dependable and solid team player, then University of Vermont graduate Scott McCarty is both your early bird—and night owl.

A strong self-starter with great motivation, Scott will be the first to arrive and the last to leave, whatever it takes to achieve success. He’s flexible and willing to go the extra mile to complete any project or assignment that comes his way.

Scott’s unyielding work ethic, coupled with his experience in public relations, communications, and management contributed to newly elected Peter Shumlin’s successful bid for Vermont governor. Scott managed Shumlin’s donor database, contacts and overall communication with prospective donors and supporters, along with his schedule. In addition, he kept the governor organized while on the campaign road and used his experience in the political sector to prep the governor for debates, prospective donors, and the press. Keeping a political candidate organized and on track can be a tough task, but Scott managed these duties with success and ease.

Scott’s strength and experience in the political sector is apparent in other clients and organizations he’s worked with, including:
ReSOURCE: A Nonprofit Community Enterprise (Burlington, VT)
Chittenden South Supervisory Union (Charlotte, VT)
Vermont Freedom to Marry Task Force (Burlington, VT/Brattleboro, VT)
City of Burlington (Burlington, VT)
Peter Shumlin for Governor (Burlington/Brattleboro, VT)
Dan Smith for Mayor (Burlington, VT)
Vermont First PAC (Brattleboro/Randolph, VT)
Hillary Clinton for President, Inc (Burlington, VT/Keene, NH)
University of Vermont (Burlington, VT)
Town of Brattleboro (Brattleboro, VT)
Hinda Miller for Mayor (Burlington, VT)
Abercrombie & Fitch (Burlington, VT)
Vermont Democratic House Campaign (Montpelier, VT)
Vermont Senate Victory Fund (Montpelier, VT)
Rich Tarrant for US Senate, Inc. (Colchester, VT)

Out of all his past experiences, Scott attributes his biggest success to his education and the work he completed at the University of Vermont that focused on student safety concerns after the death of a UVM student. He founded the Presidential Commission on Social Change and started the Think-Care-Act student safety campaign. This successful campaign brought changes to campus security and safety precautions for off campus students which resulted in improved street lighting, safer student housing situations, and better, more available off-campus transportation in the local community from the city of Burlington. Scott’s work at UVM gave him the necessary experience to translate his beliefs, especially when it comes to working in the private sector and getting tough things done.

When he’s not working, Scott is a self-admitted bookworm. Currently, Scott is reading Last Night on Twisted River by John Irving. Scott had the pleasure of meeting the author at a fundraiser in Boston while working for Governor Shumlin and was inspired to dive into his book. True to his multitasking nature, Scott is also reading Liberty by Garrison Keillor and The Murder Room by P.D. James. And—he candidly admits—he’s also tackling the last Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Scott is not only a dedicated worked and avid reader, but also an enthusiastic outdoorsman and sports fanatic. A lacrosse player since 4th grade, he currently shares his passion with others by coaching middle school and high school athletes and loves to show his support for any New England sports team. He also enjoys cooking, hiking, working out, running, spending time with friends, and hitting the ski slopes in the winter months. A Vermonter born and raised, this political junkie and history buff has a real love of Vermont, keeping it real, and most importantly, keeping it simple.

The Interview:

Sum yourself up in 140 characters or less:
Experienced #UVM grad with multiple degrees with background in political, nonprofit & public sectors wants to work 4 you!

Why did you choose your major? What captured you?
When I was going into my senior year of high school — I attended Green Mountain Boys State at Norwich University. I was bit by the public service bug thanks to my parents and knew that I wanted to study Political Science. I always had a love of history thanks to my parents and the mutliple trips we would take. History is the study of change and I am always interested in history (just look at my bookshelf) with special interest in political history and Vermont history. I believe that both Political Science and History are intertwined and compliment each other very well. I felt that during my time in classes in either department — I knew I had the background and insight to give more insightful answers and ask more proving questions.

I decided to get my masters in Public Administration because I am interested in how government creates public policy that affects everyday folks across the world. I’m interested in the people and the places that serve the public whether it is the nonprofit sector or the government sector. Public Administration is much more than just learning how to be a city or town official — it’s about how to develop policy and implement that policy so that it benefits the people that you serve and actually work for.

What does success mean to you?
Success for me means that you actually wake up in the morning and remain continuously excited about going into work. Success means that you like to stay at work to finish a task and not itch to leave at 4PM. Success, for me, is much more than a paycheck or something material. Rather, success is about feeling good about yourself and your accomplishments and the team you apart of.

Describe your ideal working environment:
I can work in any environment that has great people who love what they do and have great team mentality. In the end, it’s all about the people that make the place an enjoyable. Outdoors…Indoors? Doesn’t matter. I just like to work and be around people who enjoy what they do.

What is something you’ve learned from your mistakes?
I’m not always right. Sometimes, other people have more insight and more knowledge on a specific topic than I do. Something I have learned over the years is to be much more efficient and dependable team player as well as a better listener. It has made me a better worker and a more effective co-worker and friend to be around.

You have a million dollars. What do you do with it?
Half to my parents for being so awesome and allowing them to retire and enjoy their lives together. The other half will go towards paying off some student loans, my car, an IRA and then the rest to some local charities in Vermont.

How do they get the cream filling inside a Twinkie?
Oh, that’s what that stuff is.

If a newspaper wrote an article about your leadership style, what would the headline be?

I am pleased to recommend Scott. I know Scott personally, having hailed from the same hometown, but we also have had the opportunity to work together on campaigns and I have had the pleasure to supervise him, in this regard. Scott commits himself to anything he gets involved in. He is hard working and always ready to pitch in and assist with any task. He has proven himself to be dedicated and trustworthy. And he has the ability to remain calm and friendly under the most stressful situations. His keen understanding of policy, his connections across Vermont and his experience in politics, communications, media and policy development make him uniquely suited for any position he takes on. Scott is also active in his native Brattleboro, and is deeply respected by his neighbors. He was elected, during his sophomore year at the University of Vermont to serve as a town meeting representative and the Selectboard appointed him to serve on several town committees including the Development Review Board.
He has demonstrated to everyone his keen understanding of the issues and the meaning of engagement and being a strong team-player…I would recommend Scott for any job where enthusiasm, reliability and hard work are valued.

Scott has been volunteering for Vermont Public Radio for years, and he has always impressed me with his dedication and willingness to help out with any task. I applaud anyone who volunteers for the early morning shift that begins at 6AM, and Scott does this on a regular basis…He has a wonderful presence on the phone with listeners who are making a pledge, and because he is so engaged with the station he is able to answer listener questions that would likely stump other volunteers. He’s caring, smart, funny, energetic, and he’s got a terrific ‘can do’ attitude.
